How we put this list together
Most “best roofer” pages are written by one company about itself. This one compares six contractors who actively serve Calvert County on the things you can actually check before you sign anything:
- MHIC licence. Maryland requires a Home Improvement Commission licence for this work. A published licence number is a contractor inviting you to check.
- Manufacturer certification. GAF Master Elite, Owens Corning Platinum, Atlas Pro+ and similar programs are earned, limited in number, and unlock warranties an uncertified installer cannot offer.
- Inspection credentials. HAAG and NRCIA certifications matter specifically for storm and insurance work, where somebody has to document damage in a form an adjuster accepts.
- Where they actually are. A published address in or near Calvert County is not everything, but it tells you who is local.
- What they specialise in. A roofer who is excellent at a full exterior remodel is not automatically the right call for a hail claim, and the reverse is just as true.

If you have a flat or low-slope commercial roof in the county, they are a reasonable first call.
Their site does not publish an MHIC number, a founding year or a physical address. That is not evidence of anything — plenty of licensed contractors simply do not put it on the website — but it does mean you should ask for the licence number directly and check it before work starts.
Capital Roofing & Exteriors
Best for storm damage and insurance claimsThat is us, so weigh this accordingly. We are the newest company on this list, established in 2023, and we are not going to dress that up.
What we built the business around is the insurance side: free inspection with photo documentation, help preparing the claim, and standing on the roof with your adjuster so damage does not get missed or undervalued. We also handle water mitigation in-house, which matters when a roof fails and the ceiling is already wet — our drying equipment stays until humidity holds under 50% for a full 24 hours, not until it looks dry. Best for the strongest manufacturer warrantyGAF Master Elite is the top tier of GAF’s contractor program and a small fraction of roofers hold it. It lets them offer the GAF Golden Pledge warranty, covering materials and labour for up to 25 years — the strongest warranty published by anyone on this list.

Best for damage-inspection credentialsThe deepest stack of inspection credentials here: HAAG Certified Residential Inspector, HAAG Master Level Certified Damage Inspector, HAAG Commercial Certified Inspector, and NRCIA certification, alongside Atlas Pro+ Platinum and ProVia. HAAG Master Level in particular is the qualification adjusters themselves are trained under.
They cover residential, commercial and multi-family, plus gutters, windows, skylights, emergency tarping and financing. Their site does not publish a physical address or founding year.

Best for whole-exterior remodelsThe longest-established company on this list by a wide margin — nearly forty years — and the broadest set of trade certifications: Owens Corning Platinum Preferred, James Hardie Elite Preferred, ProVia Certified Installer, VELUX Certified Installer and HAAG Master Certified Inspector, licensed in both Maryland and Virginia.
If your project is a whole-exterior job — roof plus siding plus windows, ideally under one contract with one warranty conversation — that breadth is a real advantage and they are the obvious call in Calvert County.

Best for a local storefront you can walk intoA physical office on Main Street in Prince Frederick, which is genuinely rare in this trade and worth something if you would rather sit across a desk from somebody than meet a truck in your driveway. Established 2016, with the team citing 25+ years of combined experience.
Roofing, siding, gutters, windows, retractable awnings and insurance claim help. Their site advertises GAF Certified Installer status but does not list an MHIC number, so ask for it.

Check any Maryland roofer yourself in two minutes
- Get the licence number. Ask for the MHIC number, or find it on their site. A contractor who will not give it to you has answered your question.
- Look it up. Search the Maryland Department of Labor licensing lookup for the Home Improvement Commission. Confirm the number is active, in the company’s legal name, and free of unresolved complaints.
- Verify the certification. GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed and Atlas all run public contractor locators. If a company claims a certification, it will appear there. If it does not, ask why.
- Confirm insurance. Ask for a certificate of general liability and workers’ compensation, sent directly from their insurer — not a PDF forwarded by the salesperson.
- Check the address exists. Drop it into Maps. A storm-chaser working out of a rented van in your county for six weeks will not have one.
Five questions worth asking before you sign
- Who is actually on my roof? Employees or subcontractors, and either way, who carries their workers’ comp.
- What happens when you open it up and the decking is rotten? Get the per-sheet price in writing before the tear-off, not after.
- Is the warranty on materials, labour, or both? Most warranty complaints trace back to this one question going unasked.
- If this is an insurance job, who talks to the adjuster? If the answer is “you do”, understand that you are the one arguing scope.
- What does the estimate leave out? Underlayment, ice-and-water shield, drip edge, ventilation and permit fees are where two “identical” quotes stop being identical.

Do I need a permit to replace a roof in Calvert County?
It depends on scope. Replacing the covering is treated differently from work that replaces decking or touches structure, and that determines whether a permit is required. Confirm it with the county’s permitting office for your specific address before work is scheduled, and expect your contractor to pull whatever the scope requires.
How do I know if my roof has storm damage?
Most wind and hail damage is not visible from the ground. Lifted shingle tabs, bruised mats, granule loss and damaged flashing show up only on close inspection, and none of them leak immediately — which is why so much storm damage goes unclaimed until it is no longer coverable. Get it inspected and photographed after any significant storm, whether or not you intend to file.
What is MHIC and why does it matter?
The Maryland Home Improvement Commission licenses contractors doing this work in the state. A valid MHIC licence means the company is bonded and subject to a complaint process you can actually use if a job goes wrong. Hiring an unlicensed contractor removes that protection entirely, and can complicate an insurance claim.
