1. How much does it cost to replace windows?

Window cost depends on the frame material, size, style and how the window is installed. As a general guide, a standard vinyl double-hung replacement window often costs roughly $600 to $1,200 installed. Fiberglass, wood and composite windows usually cost more, and specialty styles like bay, bow, casement and large picture windows can cost significantly more.

Other things that affect price:

  • Insert replacement vs. full-frame replacement
  • Glass package (double vs. triple pane, low-E coatings, gas fill)
  • Rot repair around the opening
  • Exterior trim and capping
  • How many windows you replace at once (larger projects often lower the cost per window)

2. How do I know when my windows need to be replaced?

Common signs include:

  • Drafts you can feel near closed windows
  • Fog or condensation between the panes
  • Windows that stick, won’t stay open or won’t lock
  • Soft, rotting or cracked frames and sills
  • Rising energy bills or rooms that are always too hot or cold
  • Single-pane glass or very old, worn-out windows
  • Excess outside noise

If you’re seeing more than one of these, an inspection is worth it. Sometimes a repair or new seals will do; sometimes replacement is the smarter long-term choice.

3. How long do windows last?

Typical lifespans for quality, well-installed windows:

  • Vinyl: about 20 to 40 years
  • Fiberglass: about 30 to 50 years
  • Wood: 30 years or more with regular maintenance
  • Aluminum: about 20 to 30 years

The seals in insulated glass often wear out sooner, commonly somewhere around 10 to 25 years, which is when you start to see fogging between the panes. Installation quality matters a lot: a poorly flashed window can leak and rot the wall long before the window itself wears out.

4. Which is better: vinyl, wood or fiberglass windows?

Vinyl is the most popular choice for value. It’s energy efficient, low maintenance and never needs painting.

Wood offers classic beauty and good insulation but needs regular painting or staining, especially in our humid climate. Clad-wood windows add a protective exterior shell.

Fiberglass is very strong and stable. It expands and contracts very little with temperature changes, can be painted and lasts a long time, but costs more.

For most Southern Maryland homes, quality vinyl offers the best balance of price, efficiency and low maintenance. Fiberglass or wood can make sense for historic homes or homeowners who want a premium look.

5. Should I get double-pane or triple-pane windows in Maryland?

For most Maryland homes, double-pane windows with a low-E coating and argon gas fill are the sweet spot. They provide strong energy performance for our mixed climate at a reasonable price.

Triple-pane windows insulate better and block more noise, so they can be worth it for very cold rooms, north-facing walls or homes near busy roads. However, they cost more and are heavier, and in our climate the extra savings often take a long time to pay back the upfront cost.

6. Are energy-efficient windows worth it?

For most homeowners, yes, especially if you’re replacing old single-pane or failing windows. Efficient windows reduce drafts, keep rooms more comfortable, cut down on condensation and help protect floors and furniture from UV fading.

When comparing windows, look for the ENERGY STAR label and check two ratings on the NFRC sticker: U-factor (lower means better insulation) and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (how much of the sun’s heat gets through). How much you save on energy depends on your current windows and your home. Federal and state incentives for energy-efficient windows change over time, so check the current rules or ask your tax professional before counting on a credit or rebate.

7. Why is there condensation on my windows?

It depends where the moisture is:

  • On the inside surface: usually high indoor humidity meeting cold glass. Using bath and kitchen exhaust fans, running a dehumidifier and improving air circulation usually help. Very frequent heavy condensation can also mean the window isn’t insulating well.
  • Between the panes: the window’s seal has failed and the insulating gas has escaped. The glass unit or the window needs to be replaced.
  • On the outside surface: usually normal on cool, humid mornings, and it’s actually a sign of an efficient window.

8. What is the difference between insert and full-frame window replacement?

Insert (pocket) replacement fits a new window into the existing frame. It’s faster, less expensive and leaves interior trim and siding untouched. It’s a good fit when the existing frame is solid, square and dry.

Full-frame replacement removes the entire old window down to the rough opening. It lets us inspect for rot, replace damaged wood, properly flash and insulate the opening, and sometimes get a bit more glass area. It’s the better choice when there’s water damage or the frames are in poor condition. We’ll recommend the right method after inspecting your windows.

9. How long does window installation take?

An experienced crew can typically install a standard insert replacement window in about an hour or less. Full-frame installs, large or specialty windows take longer. Most whole-house window projects are finished in one to three days.

Custom windows usually need to be ordered after your final measurement, so the biggest wait is often the manufacturing lead time, which can be a few weeks depending on the brand and style.

10. Can windows be replaced in the winter?

Yes. Windows can be installed year-round in Southern Maryland. Installers replace one opening at a time, so each window is open only briefly, and they use sealants and foams rated for colder temperatures.

Winter is often a great time to replace windows because you’ll feel the difference right away, and scheduling can be more flexible than during the busy spring and fall seasons.
